A court heard the couple chatted online before exchanging phone numbers and then meeting up in person.
Prosecutor Sue Ferrier said the woman only learned Kuuya was infected with the deadly disease after their brief relationship came to end.
Kuuya, of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.
Huw Rees, defending, said: "He had been in denial about his condition, something which sadly had consequences for others." "You chose to conceal something from her that you should have been open about.
The consequences have been devastating." Kuuya was jailed for two years and four months.
